Dhanbad: Environmentalists and experts from across the country gathered at IIT (ISM), Dhanbad, on Sunday to deliberate on river conservation and water equity at a two-day national conference, ‘Mission Y’.The event is centred on the theme ‘Land Acquisition for Rivers’. Conference convener and noted hydrologist Anshumali highlighted that the inaugural discussions focused on critical issues such as changing land-use patterns, survival of water streams, and the impact of climate change on river systems. He emphasised the need for a scientific approach and collective efforts to ensure sustainable management of water resources.Padma Shri awardee R K Sinha said that tributaries act as lifelines for major rivers and called for prioritising their protection in policy and planning frameworks.Environmentalist and independent MLA Saryu Roy underlined the importance of preserving smaller rivers and streams, stating that they form the backbone of larger river systems. “Without protecting the sources and tributaries, it is impossible to safeguard major rivers,” he said, stressing the need for grassroots-level conservation initiatives.Referring to Anshumali’s six-year-long research, Roy said that it has established the crucial role of stream conservation in maintaining river ecosystems.The conference is expected to provide actionable insights into sustainable river management practices.
