Ranchi: The management of Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park in Ranchi has begun taking measures to keep its residents cool as daytime temperatures continue to rise in the state capital.Dr Om Prakash Sahu, veterinary officer at the zoo, said preparations for the summer season has begun. “It is very important that all animals and birds are provided appropriate facilities to protect them from illness or heat stroke in the hot weather,” he said.In the aviary, a water fountain has been installed, and the roof has been covered with dried grass to reduce heat. Birds are also being given oral rehydration solutions and fruits to prevent dehydration.Water coolers are being set up outside the cages of lions, tigers and leopards. The open roofs of their enclosures have been partly covered with dried grass. While eggs have been removed from their meals, the quantity of meat has been reduced by up to 2 kg. “In winters the food intake is increased but in summer we reduce it a little to prevent them from indigestion,” Sahu said.Herbivorous animals are being given more water-rich foods such as cucumbers and watermelons to prevent dehydration. Elephants have been provided with a pool where they can take water baths to regulate their body temperature.“Multivitamins, especially vitamin C, are being given to herbivores to increase their immunity level. Additionally, all animals are being given Restobal syrup to increase immunity and prevent dehydration,” Sahu said.Snakes, which remained in hibernation throughout winter, have now resumed feeding as the hibernation period ended. Meanwhile, the pools of the alligator and hippopotamus are being filled with fresh water daily. Sahu said the zoo’s green cover, which is at 72% of its total area, also provides respite to the animals from heat.
