Kanpur: Widespread monsoon showers brought significant relief from the prevailing heat and humid weather in Kanpur on Monday, with an average of 38.6 mm of rainfall recorded across the city. The overnight rain, accompanied by dense cloud cover and cool north-easterly winds, brought down the minimum temperature to 24 degrees Celsius, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain over the next 24 hours.According to weather observations, different parts of the city received between 36.3 mm and 40.3 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours. The persistent showers, coupled with dense cloud cover, made the weather pleasant despite the maximum temperature touching 36.4 degrees Celsius. As rain continued through the night, the minimum temperature dropped to 24 degrees Celsius, providing residents with much-needed relief from the sultry conditions experienced over the past week.Humidity levels, however, remained high, with both the maximum and minimum relative humidity reaching 98 per cent. The impact of the humidity was offset by cool north-easterly winds blowing at speeds ranging from 4.1 kmph to 9.4 kmph, which reduced discomfort and virtually eliminated the effect of the daytime heat.Meteorologists attributed the widespread rainfall to the monsoon trough returning to its normal position, which triggered rain activity from Sunday evening that continued intermittently until Monday afternoon.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued active monsoon conditions over the next 24 hours, with an 80 to 100 per cent probability of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across all districts of the Kanpur division.The IMD has also predicted persistent dense cloud cover throughout the day and warned that strong winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph may occur in several areas during thunderstorms.For Kanpur Nagar, the weather department has forecast a 90 to 100 per cent probability of moderate to heavy rainfall. Following the overnight downpour, intermittent showers are expected to continue through the day, keeping the maximum temperature between 30 degrees Celsius and 32 degrees Celsius.Weather expert Dr SN Sunil Pandey of Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology (CSA) said that increased atmospheric moisture and the formation of fresh weather systems are likely to keep the Kanpur division under cloudy skies from July 21 to July 24.He said isolated areas may experience strong surface winds, scattered light rain or drizzle, and spells of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds, thunderstorms and lightning. He added that there is very little possibility of bright sunshine over the next two days as active monsoon conditions are expected to persist.The continued rainfall is expected to provide sustained relief from high temperatures while improving overall weather conditions across the region. However, residents have been advised to remain alert during thunderstorms and periods of strong winds.
