Jhansi: In a bid to tackle the persistent problem of overflowing garbage bins and littering from trains, the Wagon Repair Workshop, Jhansi has developed a modified high-capacity garbage disposal system for LHB coaches.According to CPRO NCR Shivam Sharma, the new system has a holding capacity of 367.4 litres, compared with around 18 litres in the existing arrangement, substantially reducing the need for repeated emptying of bins during long journeys. The collector can be emptied during maintenance after the journey.The system has been designed using stainless steel to ensure durability, corrosion resistance and longer service life. The undergear collector has a specialised 3:10 taper design, which facilitates its quick removal for emptying and maintenance. The drop box and collector can also be cleaned independently from both sides, helping maintain hygiene and control odour.Officials said the design makes use of available space without disturbing the existing undergear or structural components of the coach. “The innovation has already been submitted to the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) for inspection and approval. Necessary modifications, if suggested by RDSO during inspection, will be incorporated before further implementation”, Shivam Sharma said.The estimated assembly cost of each disposal bin is around Rs 12,000, with each coach having two bins on both exits.GM NCR Naresh Pal Singh who has been monitoring the project said the new system could eliminate the need for multiple rounds of manual handling of garbage bins during long-distance journeys.
