Kanpur: Residents heaved a sigh of relief from the intense heat as pre-monsoon showers lashed the city early Tuesday morning, with dense clouds hovering overhead until the afternoon.North-easterly winds further helped in bringing down the day temperature, though rising humidity levels caused sultry conditions later in the afternoon.According to the weather observatory of CSA University, 6.4 mm rainfall recorded in the morning coupled with overcast conditions led to a sharp fall in mercury. The maximum temperature plunged to 31.3 degree Celsius, nearly 9 degree below Monday’s maximum temperature. The minimum temperature also dropped to 25.4 degree Celsius. The maximum relative humidity was recorded at 86% while minimum humidity stood at 77%. Wind speed ranged between 5.3 kmph and 8.4 kmph during the day.According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the south-west monsoon advanced rapidly and made a spectacular entry into new areas of UP and Uttarakhand on June 30. With the monsoon gaining momentum during the final days of June, the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) has now fully covered central and north-eastern parts of the country. The IMD has forecast partly cloudy skies accompanied by thunderstorms and light rain or showers across all six districts of the Kanpur division over the next 24 hours.Activation of monsoon winds is expected to bring a slight fall in maximum temperatures, providing relief from the prevailing heatwave conditions. For Kanpur Nagar, the weather department has predicted strong winds accompanied by thunderstorms during afternoon or evening hours with chances of light rain or showers occurring once or twice. The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 40 degree Celsius while the minimum temperature may remain around 28 degree Celsius.Meanwhile, weather expert of CSA University Dr S N Sunil Pandey said that due to the presence of atmospheric moisture and increased moisture flow, cloud cover, haze and strong winds are likely to prevail in the Kanpur division between June 30 and July 5.He said isolated drizzles or light rain accompanied by gusty winds and thunderclouds may occur in some areas.Dr Pandey further stated that temperatures may fluctuate by 5 to 6 degree Celsius during the coming days while humid and sultry weather conditions are likely to persist. He also warned of “warm nights” and said heat intensity could rise sharply whenever bright sunshine returns.
