Namakkal: An election flying squad on Tuesday seized six tonnes of ration rice that was being transported without valid documents in Kalipatty area near Tiruchengode.According to an official source, the election flying squad seized the ration rice during a vehicle check in the early hours of the day. “They stopped a mini truck that was heading to Namakkal from Salem for vehicle check and found 120 bags of ration rice weighing six tonnes in it.” Since the truck driver, identified as V Saravanan, 38, failed to produce valid documents for the rice, the matter was reported to Tiruchengode revenue divisional officer Lenin, who seized the rice and the vehicle. The seized items were later handed over to food cell wing officer Mangalanathan. The source said a case has been registered against Saravanan. “An investigation is under way to trace the source of ration rice and why it was being transported to Namakkal.” Revenue officials lauded the poll flying squad, comprising Gautham Janakaraj, Karthi and Kavin Sathish, for the ration rice seizure.
