Residents navigate waterlogged streets using makeshift inflatable rafts and boats to transport essential items and move to safer locations after heavy rainfall triggered a sharp rise in the water level of the Pandu River, flooding residential areas in Barra and surrounding localities, in Kanpur on Monday
Kanpur: The Pandu river is overflowing after 240 mm rainfall in the last three days. Several villages and colonies on its banks are flooded.Floodwater has entered houses and submerged roads, leaving people stranded. The district administration has started rescue operations.The road from Barra to Meherban Singh Ka Purwa is under 3 to 4 feet of water with strong current, making it risky to cross. Other villages near the river are also waterlogged.Former MP Sukhram Singh inspected the flood-hit areas on a tractor and witnessed the condition of around half a dozen villages. In Meherban Singh Ka Purwa, roads are submerged, while residents remain trapped in lanes filled with 2 to 8 feet of water.An NDRF team has reached Biharipur village and launched rescue operations. Mayapuram, Ravidas Puram and Bihari Purwa are among the worst-affected areas, where floodwater has entered residential neighbourhoods. Several residents remain inside their homes, awaiting evacuation.Govind Nagar MLA Surendra Maithani also visited the flood-affected villages and assured residents that government assistance would reach them soon.
