Guwahati: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has introduced three pairs of special trains after floods disrupted rail traffic in upper Assam.NFR will run two pairs of special trains between Mariani and Lumding and one pair between Rangiya and Mariani junctions till Friday to help stranded passengers.NFR CPRO Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said train services between the Simaluguri-Namtiali and Simaluguri-Selenghat sections under Tinsukia division were suspended after severe flooding in and around Simaluguri town in Sivasagar district, in the interest of passenger safety and operational requirements.Floodwaters overtopped and damaged tracks at Simaluguri, cutting off rail connectivity to parts of upper Assam. As a result, 13 long-distance trains to and from Dibrugarh and Tinsukia have been diverted via the Rangiya-Rangapara-Dibrugarh route.A pair of Nagaland Express trains has been short-terminated or short-originated at Mariani.The CPRO said two pairs of special trains would run between Lumding and Mariani. “Another pair of special trains will operate between Rangiya Junction and Mariani Junction. These special trains will have stoppages at every station on their route,” he added.NFR said it evacuated over 2,000 passengers and arranged road transport for them.
