New Delhi: A 28-year-old woman died after allegedly falling from a residential building in south Delhi’s Palika Kunj on Saturday evening.Alleging foul play, the brother and uncle of the newlywed woman claimed that she was being harassed for dowry. They said she did not stay in the building, and they did not see any blood at the spot or external injuries on her body.Police said they are investigating all possible angles, including that of suicide, and establishing the sequence of events leading to her death. Inquest proceedings are underway, and her family’s allegations regarding dowry harassment are being verified. No one has yet been called for questioning.Akriti (28), who married on April 24, 2026, and was a sales executive with a healthcare company in Chhatarpur, lived with her husband, who is currently unemployed, and father-in-law, an inspection official with the Delhi govt labour department, in Pushp Vihar. At 8 pm on Saturday, the Lodhi Colony police station was alerted that a woman was critically injured after falling from the NDMC residential building. Akriti was taken to AIIMS, where she was declared dead.“We saw her phone, slippers and bag lying on the third floor of the building and nothing else that can count as evidence,” her uncle, Mananjay Sutar, said, adding that he does not know how she reached the building.Akriti’s brother, Amay Sutar, said. “Although her husband initially refused dowry, we gave her some gold during the wedding. However, the husband started physically assaulting her regularly after a few days and began demanding cash and a car,” he said. Her family also alleged that she would often call up her mother to say that she was being “tortured and beaten up”. Mananjay said, “Akriti’s sister-in-law, who lives elsewhere, used to support Akriti’s husband, who once even threatened to kill her.”Mananjay claimed that the couple, who knew each other from their school days, used to have frequent arguments and physical altercations even before their marriage. The two had a huge row over dowry demands on Friday, he said, adding they would also quarrel about him not being employed.Akriti last spoke to her mother around 7 pm on Saturday, Mananjay said. “Akriti hosted a small party at work for her colleagues to celebrate her wedding, after which her husband came to pick her up from her office. She called her mother to say she was heading home,” he said.
