Gurgaon: The state govt has approved two projects worth Rs 69 crore in road works, including the long-delayed sectors 68–69 missing link and a comprehensive upgrade of the 7.1-km IFFCO Chowk–Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) corridor. The projects promise better connectivity, pedestrian safety and drainage for commuters navigating new sectors. The financial approval was given at a high-powered works purchase committee (HPWPC) meeting held late on Monday, chaired by Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini. The Sector 68 and 69 project addresses a gap that has persisted even as residential development has expanded around Sohna Road and SPR.Work on the 2-km road project began in 2019, but a 900-metre stretch remained incomplete because of land acquisition issues. Around 1.1 km was developed in 2022, leaving commuters with an interrupted link. The Rs 27 crore project will now complete the missing stretch and develop nearly 2 km of service road, along with stormwater drainage, footpaths, cycle tracks and green belts. The existing 1.1-km section will also be repaired, officials said.Once connected, the road will provide an alternative link between Sohna Road and SPR and improve access to Sectors 68, 69, 70, 70A, 75 and 76.The project is also important as GMDA plans to construct an elevated road on SPR, and during the construction, the road will provide alternative connectivity as well, the official said.Another project focuses on a much busier stretch. The 7.1-km stretch between IFFCO Chowk and SPR cuts through sectors 27, 28, 29, 43, 44, 52, 52A, 56 and 57 and carries traffic from densely developed residential and commercial areas. The corridor also has two metro stations and several busy junctions, including Millennium City Centre, Ardee Mall, Tau Devi Lal Park and Hong Kong Bazaar.GMDA plans to overhaul supporting infrastructure along the Rs 42 crore project. The carriageway will be overlaid, while footpaths and cycle tracks will be developed on both sides. Stormwater drains will be constructed and junctions upgraded, with grills and other safety measures planned to improve pedestrian movement. Both the projects are targeted for completion within a year.“We are focusing on comprehensive corridor development, where strengthening the carriageway goes hand in hand with service roads, footpaths, cycle tracks, drainage and junction improvements. The objective is to make these corridors safer and more functional for all categories of road users,” GMDA CEO P C Meena said.Meanwhile, residents welcomed the development and said that construction of the missing link is long overdue.Rajat Srivastava, a resident of Sector 70A, said this road will significantly improve connectivity for residents of Sectors 68, 69 and 70. “At present, if we have to travel towards Badshapur, many of us have to take the SPR or go towards Vatika Chowk, which adds to the distance and travel time. Once this link is completed, we will have a direct connection,” he said.
