Kolkata: The body of a 42-year-old man bearing severe head trauma, a fractured right hand, and blood oozing from the left ear was found on a footpath on Sarat Bose Road on Thursday morning. Cops have arrested the accused, Raju Naskar alias Napit (28), a resident of Ranarpara Kalibari in Joynagar in South 24 Parganas. Police said Naskar, a beggar, was a habitual offender and attacked people with stones whenever they opposed him. However, none of the other incidents ended up in a murder. The body of the victim, Somnath Chakraborty alias Bumba, a resident from Dakghar in Maheshtala, was found by a tea stall owner, Sudhir Giri, outside Sudesh Bhawan on Sarat Bose Road. Cops said Chakraborty used to do odd jobs and lived on pavements when he had morning assignments.Deputy commissioner of police (south) Priyobrota Roy said, “Our probe reveals this is an isolated incident stemming from a personal dispute between two homeless individuals. Further probe is on to establish the exact motive.” Naskar has confessed to his crime. “The postmortem showed that the victim was killed with a stone. The victim’s relatives were contacted to hand over his body,” Roy added. An officer said the incident revived memories of the notorious stoneman murders that terrorised Kolkata in the 1980s.
