Surat: A 40-year-old woman and her 19-year-old daughter were found hanging from ceiling fans at their residence in Shivnagar Society under the Puna police station area on Wednesday afternoon. Police have registered an accidental death case and launched an investigation to determine whether anyone abetted the suicides.The deceased are Jasa Shrivastav and her daughter Muskan. According to police, the incident took place sometime between 12.30pm and 3pm, when the two were alone at home.Police said Jasa was found hanging from a ceiling fan in one room using a saree, while Muskan was found hanging from a ceiling fan in another room, also using a saree.Police added that Jasa’s husband, Awdhesh Shrivastav (51), was at a diamond unit for work at the time of the incident. One of their sons had also gone to work, while her twin sons had gone to school.Police have registered an accidental death case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and began an inquiry. The circumstances that led to the deaths are yet to be established.A family member has alleged that the mother and daughter were subjected to harassment by a man identified as Himanshu Singh, who was from the same village in Uttar Pradesh as Awdhesh. Singh had reportedly come to Surat in search of work around two years ago, after which Awdhesh allowed him to stay with the family. Following the incident, Singh allegedly left Surat and is currently untraceable.“Post-mortem reports have confirmed that both victims died by suicide. We are investigating the deaths from various angles such as an alleged affair involving a family member. Jasa and her husband Awdhesh had reportedly quarrelled several times over the past year. We are also searching for Singh, who was the first person to reach the house after the incident,” a police officer said.
