Kanpur: After enduring a day of intense heat and sultry weather conditions with the mercury touching 38°C, the city residents finally got relief on Sunday evening when moderate to heavy showers lashed the city around 7.45 pm accompanied by thunderclouds and winds blowing at nearly 20 kmph.Earlier in the day, the city witnessed a marginal rise of 0.6°C in maximum temperature, which further added to the discomfort of citizens. The oppressive weather forced many residents to remain indoors during the afternoon hours. The maximum relative humidity was recorded at 74 per cent, making conditions extremely humid and uncomfortable.According to weather data, the city’s heat index remained between 41°C and 42°C throughout the day due to high humidity levels. Meteorological conditions indicated a strong possibility of thunderstorms and rainfall during the evening hours, which eventually materialised.Clouds began gathering over the city around 6.30 pm, and by 7.45 pm, rainfall started in several parts of Kanpur, bringing much-needed respite from the prevailing heat.Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the monsoon will remain fully active across the Kanpur division over the next few days. The region is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, while some areas may witness heavy downpours.The IMD stated that maximum temperatures across the division are expected to hover between 35°C and 37°C, while minimum temperatures are likely to remain between 29°C and 31°C. However, high humidity levels may continue to cause sultry conditions.For Kanpur Nagar, the weather department forecast heavily overcast skies during the afternoon and evening hours. There is a 65-80 per cent probability of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms between Sunday night and Monday morning. The city’s maximum temperature is expected to remain around 36°C, while the minimum temperature may settle near 30°C.SN Sunil Pandey, weather expert at CSA University, said that due to increased atmospheric moisture and enhanced moisture flow, the Kanpur division is likely to witness cloudy skies and strong winds between July 5 and July 8. He added that isolated light rain or drizzle, along with thunderclouds, lightning and gusty winds, may occur in several areas during this period.He further warned that heat and humidity levels could rise sharply whenever sunlight breaks through the cloud cover.
