Srinagar, September 28: MLA Budgam, Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, while supporting the Resolution presented by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah earlier is set to move an amendment to the Resolution before the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly, seeking to explicitly place on record the House’s anguish and disapproval over the measures initiated on and after 5 August 2019.
The amendment proposes that, after the words “6th November, 2024”, the following words be inserted in the Resolution:
“While expressing its deep anguish and disapproval over the unilateral measures initiated on and after 5 August 2019, which resulted in the cessation of Article 370 and Article 35A, and the reorganization of the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.”
Aga Muntazir said the amendment is intended to ensure that the constitutional and political developments following August 5, 2019, are clearly reflected in the Assembly’s proceedings and in its position on the future of Jammu and Kashmir.
“This amendment seeks to place our constitutional concerns clearly on record. The developments since 5 August 2019 fundamentally altered the constitutional and political framework of Jammu and Kashmir, and the Assembly must be able to articulate its position on those developments in clear and unambiguous terms,” Aga Muntazir said.
He said the amendment should be viewed in the broader context of the demand for the restoration of full statehood and constitutional safeguards for Jammu and Kashmir.
“The demand for restoration of full statehood must go together with the restoration of constitutional safeguards.”
“The people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve a clear and unequivocal articulation of these concerns from their elected representatives,” he said.
Aga Muntazir further said that the amendment builds upon the Assembly’s earlier Resolutions and seeks to ensure that the developments following August 5, 2019, are expressly acknowledged in the present.
