Chandigarh: The municipal corporation (MC) is set to build new sheds at the Raipur Kalan gaushala to address a shortage of space for cattle and fodder. The civic body has prepared an estimate of Rs 2.31 crore for the project, which will come up for approval at the MC house meeting Friday.The proposal was initiated by the medical officer of health (MOH), which manages the city’s gaushalas. Following a site inspection, the engineering department endorsed the requirement and prepared the cost estimate.According to the agenda, a new shed is proposed near the effluent treatment plant (ETP) for storing dry and green fodder, while three temporary sheds are planned to accommodate around 165 cows. The project is expected to improve fodder management and ensure timely feed supply for animals housed in shed no. 3.During a joint inspection by officials of the MOH office and the engineering department’s building and roads wing, a site was identified for the proposed structures. However, officials suggested that the cattle and fodder sheds located near the incineration plant should be kept separate from the facility to avoid any risk arising from its operations.Officials also noted that housing cattle close to the incineration plant could hurt public and religious sentiments. A proposal was, therefore, made to shift the fodder shed to an area earmarked for parking.However, citing limited land availability and operational requirements conveyed by the MOH office, the MC decided to retain the originally proposed site. The proposal has been finalised based on available space, the need to accommodate stray cattle and drawings prepared by the civic body’s architect.
