Dead worker shown unmarried in PF claim; parents face FIR

Mohali: The parents of a deceased municipal corporation sanitation worker have been booked for allegedly declaring him unmarried in EPF claim documents despite official records showing he was married. The case was registered after the worker’s widow, Shamli, submitted RTI-obtained documents that allegedly showed her husband Vinod Kumar as unmarried in papers filed with the EPF office. Vinod died in a road accident while on duty in May 2025.Police said scrutiny of the documents found a mismatch between the EPF claim form and the death certificate, which records Vinod’s marital status as married. The claim form allegedly carried the thumb impression of his father. An FIR has been registered against Vinod’s parents under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for alleged cheating, forgery and use of forged documents.Police said allegations regarding retention of insurance money could not be substantiated during the inquiry as insurance benefits are payable to the nominee named in the policy. The investigation is under way.
