Mandya: Deputy commissioner Kumara on Thursday emphasised that replacing conventional streetlights with energy-efficient LED bulbs is essential for conserving energy, reducing maintenance costs, and ensuring long-term durability.Currently, urban local bodies in the district spend around Rs 15 crore annually on electricity for street lighting. With the transition to LED lights, electricity consumption is expected to reduce by nearly 58%, resulting in an estimated annual savings of Rs 7 to 8 crores on power bills.During a meeting on the implementation of the Centralised Control and Monitoring System (CCMS) for streetlights, the deputy commissioner directed officials to convert all streetlights in the eight urban local bodies of Mandya district into LED lights to achieve significant energy savings.Under the proposed project, a total of 15,593 conventional streetlights will be replaced with LED bulbs, while 8,500 new LED streetlights will also be installed. The project includes comprehensive maintenance of the lighting system for a seven-year period to ensure smooth functioning and durability. To enhance efficiency and monitoring, Kumara instructed officials to install smart meters and a CCMS that will enable the collection of real-time data on power consumption and performance of streetlights. This system is expected to help authorities manage lighting network more effectively and address issues promptly. After reviewing the project proposal presented by consultants, CESC officials, representatives of urban local bodies, the DC directed the officers concerned to initiate necessary steps for the timely and effective implementation of the project.
