Kanpur: A man and his son died of toxic gas while cleaning a septic tank at Anand apartment in Gooba Garden in Kalyanpur area of the city on early Wednesday morning. On being informed, ACP Kalyanpur Ashutosh, DCP West SM Qasim Abidi, along with an SDRF team, reached the spot and pulled out three people from the septic tank after a rescue operation for about an hour. All three were taken to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, where doctors declared the man and son dead, said police.Irfan, a resident of the Colonelganj police station area, said he went to clean the septic tank along with his father-in-law Javed (45) and Javed’s son Abid (25). “Around Tuesday midnight, we set up the entire setup and all three of us went inside for cleaning.”After completing the first round of cleaning, all three came out and then went down again at around 2 o’clock. He said, “In the second round, Javed and Abid went deeper and got trapped. On getting no response for a long time, I raised alarm. My head had also started spinning.” Their family informed the police on Dial 112. ACP Kalyanpur said, “Three men, all residents of Colonelganj, were working since 12 o’clock at night. At 3:30 in the morning, they fainted while cleaning the septic tank. A man and his son died. Further investigation is underway.”The bodies were sent for postmortem, and the case is being investigated to determine whether safety standards were violated.
