Kanpur: A 30-year-old man died while his wife was critically injured after two armed miscreants allegedly entered their house through the rooftop late Friday, attacked them with sharp weapons and later fled with jewellery and a motorbike.The incident took place in Devasadh village in the Sadh police station area of Kanpur.The victim was identified as Mohammad Mumtaz alias Kallu (30), who lived with his wife, Shahjahan (26), and their four-month-old daughter.According to the woman’s statement to police, the assailants had covered their faces with black cloth and demanded jewellery from the couple.She alleged that despite being told that the family had no jewellery, the duo brutally assaulted them, leaving both victims in a bloodied condition. She further told police that the accused also took away the CCTV DVR installed in the house.According to Shahjahan, their house is located in an isolated area, nearly 1 km from the village, preventing them from raising an alarm and getting immediate help.Police were informed only after the woman, along with her daughter, managed to reach the village and alert local residents.After receiving information, police from the Bidhnu and Sadh police stations reached the spot.Mumtaz was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead, while Shahjahan’s condition was stated to be critical.Preliminary investigation revealed that Mumtaz had previously lived in Saudi Arabia, had returned only a few months ago, and was working as a driver.ACP Krishnakant said the forensic team had collected evidence and sniffer dogs had been deployed for the investigation.Police said one of the sniffer dogs led investigators to the house of a villager near the Bidhnu canal. During questioning, it emerged that the man lived with his wife while his sons were away.ACP said seven police teams had been formed to crack the case. He added that CCTV footage from nearby areas was being analysed and the accused would be arrested soon.
