T’puram: A 30-year-old man was arrested with nearly 94g of methamphetamine, valued at several lakh rupees, from Kazhakkoottam around 1am on Sunday. Police suspect the accused was planning to distribute the synthetic drug among IT professionals and college students in Kazhakkoottam region.The accused, identified as Shamnu, 30, of Malayinkeezhu, was arrested by a joint team of Kazhakkoottam police and city Dansaf squad during a late-night operation near Al Saj Convention Centre.Acting on a tip-off, Dansaf team led by sub-inspector Vaishakh V S intercepted the car in which Shamnu was travelling. On spotting the police, the accused allegedly reversed the vehicle in an attempt to escape and rammed the Dansaf vehicle.

However, the officers chased and overpowered him after a brief struggle.During the search, police recovered 37.77g of methamphetamine from Shamnu’s possession and another 55.86g concealed inside the car, taking the total seizure to 93.63g. The vehicle used for transporting the narcotics was also seized.A case was registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police are now probing the source of the contraband and trying to identify others involved in the drug trafficking network. Police said further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.
