Thiruvananthapuram: State govt is set to initiate a departmental inquiry against suspended ADGP M R Ajith Kumar following findings that he allegedly interfered with the investigation into the controversial Nava Kerala Yatra assault case in Alappuzha in 2023.The inquiry is expected to precede filing of formal charges, with a DGP-rank officer likely to be appointed as inquiry officer. An official order appointing the inquiry officer is expected shortly.The inquiry will examine all allegations against Kumar, record witness statements and provide him an opportunity to present his defence and submit supporting documents. If the allegations are substantiated, govt is likely to initiate criminal proceedings in addition to departmental action, including withholding future salary increments.

If he is able to establish his innocence, he could be cleared of all charges.The move follows an investigation led by Alappuzha SP Shoukath Ali, which concluded that Kumar interfered with the probe into the assault case. However, since Kumar held a higher rank than the investigating SP, the earlier probe couldn’t recommend disciplinary action despite identifying irregularities. The proposed departmental inquiry by a DGP-rank officer is intended to overcome that limitation.Kumar was suspended after DGP Ravada A Chandrasekhar submitted a report confirming alleged interference in the case. Home minister approved the suspension after consultations with chief minister. The action also effectively blocks Kumar’s promotion to the rank of DGP.The special investigation team report, submitted to home department, alleged that Kumar manipulated the investigation into the alleged assault by then CM’s official gunmen. According to the report, Kumar directed investigators to alter the inquiry report to create the impression that there was insufficient evidence, thereby attempting to shield the accused.The SIT also cited statements from members of the earlier probe team, who reportedly said that they were summoned to ADGP’s office and instructed to revise the report. These witness statements formed a key part of SIT’s findings, which ultimately led to govt’s decision to suspend Kumar, pending further departmental proceedings.
