Surat: A 25-year-old content creator was arrested by Cyber Crime police for allegedly posting misleading information about the protest at Jantar Mantar and provoking people online. The accused, Adiya Baraiya, a resident of Varachha, was booked for allegedly making a forged electronic report after he claimed on a social media page that a woman had died during the protest.According to investigators, Baraiya uploaded an image of a woman and posted an obituary-style message expressing grief, stating that the entire country was saddened by her death. Police said the post was shared on Facebook without verification of the claim or the circumstances.

Cyber Crime sleuths said they suspect Baraiya received the information on social media and, believing it to be true, circulated it further. Police said that based on their inquiry so far they do not believe Baraiya created the image of the woman himself, but he amplified the claim by presenting it as confirmed.Police said Baraiya has an MSc Physics degree and has been active on social media as a content creator for four years. Officers said that he used a name similar to another popular social media page in order to attract quick viewership.“The accused did not make efforts to verify if what he was posting were true. He did not even consider what would be the impact of the false information on people and how he was sharing misleading information,” police said.Cyber Crime officials said their teams are monitoring social media to track misleading content, adding that strict action is taken when information is shared to spread hatred. Baraiya told police his intention was to share information with his viewers. Police did not find any political affiliation and he is not associated with any group of activists currently active in the Jantar Mantar protest. Baraiya’s father is a watchman and the family is from Bhavnagar.
