Surat: Parts of Surat remained submerged for the second consecutive day on Friday after floodwaters from creeks entered the city on Thursday, disrupting daily life and leaving several localities waterlogged.Officials said despite moderate rainfall on Friday, overflowing creek waters spilled into surrounding areas, worsening the situation in low-lying pockets. The problem was compounded as creeks stopped taking in rainwater released through stormwater drainage systems, causing water to back up and spread into different neighbourhoods. Surat recorded 41 mm of rainfall between 6 am and 8 pm on Friday, but water was yet to recede from several flood-affected areas by evening.Residents were seen struggling to reach workplaces, navigating inundated streets and blocked routes. With conditions uncertain, textile markets were advised to remain alert and to resume operations only if the situation was deemed safe.Rescue teams evacuated 260 people from affected areas and shifted them to safer locations. Relief distribution continued through the day, with authorities supplying 43,750 food packets, 26,690 water bottles and 6,800 milk pouches to residents in need.According to civic updates, the city identified 68 waterlogged locations. Water began receding from 31 spots, while 37 locations continued to report stagnant water. The flooding also led to major traffic disruptions, with six key roads remaining blocked due to heavy waterlogging.To coordinate mitigation and relief, the urban development department formed two committees — one at the state level and another at the city level — to oversee flood control measures and relief operations.Medical teams provided treatment to 648 people in flood-hit localities. Around 7,000 Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) employees were deployed on the ground to support rescue, relief distribution, drainage clearing and restoration work as the city continued to bring the flood situation under control.
