Kanpur: A 30-year-old man was arrested on Thursday in connection with the death of an elderly woman whom he allegedly assaulted after entering her house with the intent to commit theft on Sept 15 in the Shanti Nagar locality of Chaubepur in Kanpur Nagar district.Police said the accused, Balmiki, was arrested during intensive vehicle and foot patrols conducted in sensitive and mixed-population areas.The victim, Kamla Devi (65), succumbed to her injuries earlier in the day in a city hospital.According to police, Balmiki allegedly kicked and punched Kamla when she resisted, causing serious head and chest injuries and leaving her unconscious.He then allegedly fled with a bag containing jewellery and Rs 12,000 in cash from a cupboard, police said.Kamla’s daughter, Sarla, a private school teacher, learnt about the incident from neighbours and rushed to the house. An FIR was registered based on her complaint.Chaubepur station house officer Durgesh Mishra said the accused was produced before a court in Mati, Kanpur Dehat, and remanded for further legal proceedings under Sections 305, 333, 115(2), 105 and 317(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
