New Delhi: A 26-year-old man died after allegedly drowning in a swimming pool at a school in southwest Delhi’s Najafgarh Wednesday.The deceased, Rahul Rai, a resident of Jharoda village in southwest Delhi, packed cartons at a private company owned by his friend. Doctors at a private hospital declared him brought dead when the police arrived there.A case of negligence has been registered, and a probe is on to ascertain whether adequate safety measures were present at the time of the incident.Rahul had gone swimming in Bholi Ram Public School’s pool with his friends Suraj Singh, Tarun Kumar and Bhavishya. Police said the group had paid an entry fee of Rs 650 to use the facility. “Rahul drowned around 5.30pm while swimming. His friends alerted the pool staff, following which he was rushed to the hospital,” a senior police officer said. TOI approached the school for comment, but it made no response.Police said a team is examining CCTV footage to establish the exact sequence of events leading to Rahul’s drowning. They are also verifying whether a lifeguard was on duty as required, and whether they had ventured into the deep end of the pool when the incident took place.Police suspect no foul play at this stage. The post-mortem report is awaited.
