Bengaluru: Local residents staged a protest demanding an immediate completion of the repair work on the Maragondanahalli-Kittaganur main road in KR Pura, where a toddler died in an accident Sunday evening. The accident occurred near Kashappa Circle when a rashly driven car rear-ended a stationary two-wheeler, throwing the riders onto the road. While two fell to the left, two-year-old H Trishan fell to the right and came under the wheels of the car. Trishan was shifted to a nearby private hospital on Bhattarahalli main road, where he succumbed to his injuries.According to the family, the boy’s father Harish, from Venkatakala in Yelahanka, is a mechanical engineer working at a private company, and his mother is a homemaker.“Harish and his wife were in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, to celebrate Shivaratri. Harish left Trishan at his aunt Vijayalakshmi’s house in KR Pura.Vijayalakshmi and her son Badrinath decided to visit a temple at Maragondanahalli. Taking Trishan with them, they rode to the temple. Owing to traffic congestion, they were waiting near a supermarket when the tragedy took place,” an investigating officer said. The boy’s parents flew down to the city Monday after which police shifted the body for an autopsy.Police booked a case against the car driver, identified as Krishna Mohan Menon, a resident of an apartment at Bandapura village, Old Madras Road.Blaming the bad condition of the main road, which is under repair, hundreds of local residents and commuters staged a protest at the accident spot Monday morning. Police intervened and promised to bring the matter to the notice of the authorities concerned.Ashok S, president of Kannur gram panchayat, alleged that the roads in the area turned into “death traps” due to the regular movement of GBA garbage trucks.“Over 500 trucks ply daily to dump the city’s waste in landfills located near the two (Kannur and Kithaganur) gram panchayats. Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) and GBA failed to provide special funds to develop and maintain the roads near the landfill sites. The movement of heavy vehicles worsened the road conditions in the area, leading to accidents. We decided to stop garbage trucks from dumping waste in the landfills,” Ashok said.Deputy commissioner of police (traffic, east) Sahil Bagla said, “How much the road condition contributed to the accident will be discovered during the course of the investigation.”
