KU to award teachers

Dharwad: Karnatak University (KU) will celebrate Educationists’ and Teachers’ Day on Sept 5 with the release of a book on former VC D C Pavate and the felicitation of 13 internationally acclaimed teachers from the university and its constituent colleges.

VC prof A M Khan said the event will be held at 11 am in the Senate Hall. The highlight of the programme will be the release of the book ‘Dr D C Pavate: As an Educationist and Administrator’. Padma Shri awardee orthopaedic surgeon Dr John Ebnezar will deliver the Dr D C Pavate Memorial Foundation Lecture on “Beyond Education: Towards a Holistic and Healthy Life”.

Former principal of JSS College, Gokak, prof R H Gunaki, will be the chief guest, while prof Khan will preside over the function.

Replying to questions, prof Khan said KU continues to face a severe financial crunch, particularly in meeting pension liabilities of retired employees. It requires Rs 131 crore towards pension payments, but the state govt has released only Rs 67 crore so far. The varsity has mobilised another Rs 27 crore from its internal resources, but the amount remains insufficient, he said, adding they also need additional funds for development works.

Prof Khan said higher education minister Basavaraj Rayareddi, an alumnus of the university, has promised to resolve the funding issue. Union education minister Prahlad Joshi has also promised financial assistance from the Centre, he said.
