Thiruvananthapuram: KSRTC has been directed to ensure insurance for people injured in accidents involving its buses and to ensure that the benefits are provided without delay. SHRC chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas issued the directive to the KSRTC MD while considering a complaint alleging that nearly half of KSRTC’s buses were operating without insurance cover. The complaint was filed on the basis of documents obtained under Right to Information Act by social worker Vinod Mathew Wilson.SHRC had sought a report from KSRTC’s MD. According to the report submitted by KSRTC’s chief law officer, KSRTC buses have been exempted from taking insurance policies. However, passengers and employees are provided group insurance coverage through New India Assurance Company. The report also said that complaints could be filed if there was any delay in receiving insurance benefits.SHRC directed the MD to take necessary steps to ensure that accident victims receive the benefits due to them under the applicable insurance arrangements without delay.
