Thiruvananthapuram: Amid tragedy, the family of a 33-year-old man, who succumbed to injuries sustained in an accident, has granted a new lease on life to six people through organ donation.According to police, S Krishnalal, a native of Oruvathilkotta in the state capital, had stepped out on his bicycle for a routine errand to a nearby shop on the night of April 1. At a curve near his home, a car struck him, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to KIMS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, where doctors declared him brain dead on April 4. Family of Krishnalal, a welding worker, then chose to give others a second chance at life. By consenting to donate his organs, the family turned a moment of despair into one of hope, ensuring that Krishnalal’s life would continue through six others. The organ donation process was coordinated by Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO), which oversees organ donation in the state. Soon after, Krishnalal’s heart was allocated to a 35-year-old patient from Kumarakom undergoing treatment at Govt Medical College, Kottayam. At 2.15pm on Sunday, the heart was airlifted from Thiruvananthapuram airport in a helicopter arranged by the home department. It reached the Kottayam police ground by 2.55m and was then rushed by road, arriving at the hospital at 3.04pm, ensuring the organ remained viable for transplant. His kidneys and liver were transplanted to patients at Govt Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, and KIMS Hospital. His corneas were handed over to Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Thiruvananthapuram, where they will restore sight to two individuals.
