Srinagar, Feb 19: As the sacred crescent moon heralds the blessed month of Ramadan, Kashmir comes alive with a vibrant tapestry of devotion, tradition, and communal celebration.

The valley’s streets, fragrant with the aroma of traditional delicacies, are imbued with an atmosphere where time-honoured customs blend seamlessly with contemporary practices, creating a sense of unity, piety, and joyous festivity.

From the soulful pre-dawn SeherKhwan calls awakening the faithful for Suhoor (pre-dawn meals) to large gatherings for Iftar and Taraweeh prayers, Ramadan is observed across the Valley with deep enthusiasm and reverence. Families come together for Suhoor, strengthening bonds across generations through shared meals, prayers, and cherished moments of togetherness.

Taraweeh prayers are a spiritual highlight, with mosques resonating with melodious recitations of the Quran, offering solace and enlightenment to worshippers. The markets, particularly around Lal Chowk, are bustling with dates, a quintessential Ramadan staple , along with an array of traditional and imported delicacies.

“Imported dates are in high demand, and it’s a lucrative business for us,” says Ahmad, a shop owner in Lal Chowk.

Reflecting the evolving commerce of Ramadan, Usman Hameed notes, “We offer a blend of traditional and contemporary items, catering to both older generations and younger crowds who seek a fusion of old and new.”

Beyond commerce, Kashmir’s spirit of charity comes alive. Community kitchens and volunteer initiatives ensure that no one goes hungry, embodying the compassion and solidarity that define Ramadan. “Ramazan is about giving back and spreading joy,” says Irshad Ahmad, a volunteer. “Showing love and helping those in need brings unmatched happiness.”

Young Kashmiris, meanwhile, balance tradition and modernity, embracing inclusivity, compassion, and universal values of faith. “We cherish our traditions, but also extend kindness beyond our community, reflecting the true essence of Ramazan,” says Iram from the city outskirts.
