Kurukshetra: A fast-track special court in Kurukshetra has sentenced a Karnal resident to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a ₹1 lakh fine following his conviction for raping a six-year-old girl under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The sentence was pronounced on Aug 27.District attorney Jaimal stated that the case originated from a complaint filed at the Ladwa police station on Nov 2, 2024. The victim’s mother reported that the convict, Sompal—a relative visiting from Karnal district—was sitting in an upper room where her six-year-old daughter was playing.According to the complaint, the child came downstairs around 6 pm crying and disclosed that she had been sexually assaulted by the relative. The family immediately alerted the police.Responding officers registered an FIR against Sompal at Ladwa police station, arrested him, and subsequently remanded him to judicial custody. Investigating officers later submitted the charge sheet before the court.Following trial proceedings, the court found Sompal guilty based on forensic evidence, physical proofs, and witness statements.He was convicted under Section 6 of the POCSO Act, which mandates stringent penalties for aggravated penetrative sexual assault.
