Kanpur: A dispute between police and kanwariyas escalated into a standoff on Friday night after police stopped them from taking a DJ beyond the Boarding Ground near Sadar Kotwali. Following a heated exchange, angry kanwariyas sat on the road, announced a halt to Jalabhishek, and demanded the suspension of Sadar Kotwali in-charge Jitendra Pratap Singh.The incident began around 9:30 pm when kanwariyas attempted to move the DJ forward but were halted by police. Tensions rose further when police officers trying to reach the stage to speak with kanwariya committee members were stopped on the stairs themselves.After about 2.5 hours of uproar, district officials and ASP Ajay Kumar assured action against those at fault, following which, at around 10:30 pm, the kanwariyas resumed the yatra. Police-administration maintained security arrangements throughout.
