Chandigarh: Punjab-cadre IPS officer Kanwardeep Kaur was placed on leave as Chandigarh SSP after her three-year tenure ended on March 9, 2026. Haryana-cadre IPS officer Sumer Pratap Singh has been given additional charge in her place. Kanwardeep Kaur took over as SSP on March 9, 2023, becoming the second woman officer to hold the post in Chandigarh. According to officials, she was expected to continue for another year and was likely to become the first SSP in the city to receive an extension. The process of her continuation had already advanced through the highest administrative levels in the ministry of home affairs (MHA). The UT was likely to receive formal orders regarding her extension this week. The proposal to extend her tenure was first recommended by Punjab governor and UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria and subsequently approved by Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann. Once the Punjab govt issued a no-objection certificate, the file was forwarded to MHA, where it is currently pending final approval. Officials said with all recommendations and approvals in place, the Centre’s final order was expected shortly.MSID::129406418 413
