Udupi: Udupi Town police arrested two alleged members of the Bediya gang from Uttar Pradesh in connection with a house burglary in Ambalpady and recovered cash, watches and other articles worth around Rs 4.5 lakh.Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said the case relates to a complaint filed by AS Rama Murthy, 70, of Ambalpady, who told police that he had locked his house near Sahara Apartments on Kunjugudde Road around 1.30pm on July 1 and left for Mangaluru to stay with his daughter. When he returned on July 9, he found that the front door had been forced open. Clothes had been pulled out and scattered, and he found that cash of Rs 6 lakh kept in a bag inside a cupboard and three watches belonging to his son were missing.Based on the complaint, Udupi Town police registered a case under Sections 331(3), 331(4) and 305 of the BNS.Acting on a tip-off, police arrested the first accused, Mohammed Jaffer, 22, a resident of Akrauli village in Chandausi taluk, Sambhal district, Uttar Pradesh, near Indrali railway station on Sept 2. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed that he and his associate Kadhir, 32, had broken the lock of the house on July 7 and stolen Rs 6 lakh and three watches. The duo allegedly shared the stolen cash equally.Police recovered Rs 1.5 lakh in cash and a mobile phone worth around Rs 8,000 from Jaffer. Subsequently, a police team took him to Uttar Pradesh and recovered another Rs 1 lakh.Continuing the investigation, police arrested Kadhir, also a resident of Akrauli village, Uttar Pradesh, in Moodubidire on Friday and recovered Rs 1.6 lakh in cash, two silver coins worth Rs 6,000, five watches of different brands worth around Rs 15,000, two screwdrivers allegedly used in the burglary and a brown-coloured bag. Police said the total value of the property recovered in the case is estimated at Rs 4.5 lakh.According to police, the accused are members of the Bediya gang of Uttar Pradesh and are originally from the Baniyather-Chandausi-Akrauli area. Jaffer has a house burglary case registered against him at Nainital police station in Uttarakhand. Kadhir has allegedly been involved in six cases: two house burglary cases and one illegal arms case registered at Baniyather police station in Uttar Pradesh, and two house burglary cases and one illegal arms case registered at Civil Lines police station in Moradabad.The operation was conducted under the direction of SP Hariram Shankar, with the guidance of additional SP Sudhakar Naik and Udupi subdivision DSP Belliappa. Udupi Town police inspector Mahesh Prasad led the investigation and detection team, assisted by PSI Ratnakar K, ASIs Harish and Prasanna C, and other personnel.
