Mangaluru: A violent incident was reported at the District Prison in Mangaluru recently, where undertrial inmates allegedly created chaos, threatened prison officials, attempted assault, and damaged govt property. The complainant, Sharanabasappa, superintendent of District Prison, Mangaluru, was on duty when undertrial prisoner Mohammad Iqbal, came to his office and began shouting aggressively. The accused demanded that newly admitted prisoners be lodged in his cell as per his instructions. He allegedly used abusive language and threatened the complainant, stating that he was his “target” and would be dealt with. Despite attempts by the complainant and staff to calm him down, he continued shouting and attempted to physically assault the complainant.At the same time, another undertrial prisoner, Mohammad Afreed, joined him. Together, they verbally abused the complainant and prison staff and attempted to attack them using a plastic chair available on the prison premises. Subsequently, both accused allegedly damaged govt property, including an RO water filter machine and pipe, causing an estimated loss of Rs 12,000. Meanwhile, from Cell No 3 of ‘A’ Block, undertrial prisoner Shehraj alias Shahrukh allegedly set fire to bedding materials inside the cell. He also broke carrom boards and passed the broken pieces to the accused, instigating them further to assault the complainant and staff. The accused persons, acting together, attempted to attack prison officials and obstructed them from performing their official duties. A case was registered at the Barke police station.
