Times News NetworkKanpur: Incessant rains for the past three days have brought traffic movement in the city to a crawl, while several roads have been severely damaged, with large potholes appearing at many places. In some areas, roads caved in after rainwater seeped into the road surface, while uprooted trees blocked roads at several locations.According to the weather observatory of Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology (CSA), the city received 62.9 mm of rainfall on Monday, 40.2 mm on Tuesday and another 64.4 mm on Wednesday, taking the total rainfall to 167.5 mm in three days. The rainfall was considerably above normal for the period.The situation deteriorated further on Wednesday when widespread moderate to heavy rainfall lashed the city. Several low-lying areas, particularly in Kanpur South, were submerged, giving the appearance of islands, canals and lakes.In Govind Nagar, Chawla Market crossing was submerged under two to three feet of water, while Nandlal crossing nearby witnessed one to two feet of waterlogging. The Juhi railway underpass once again turned into a deep canal following heavy rain. Police personnel stopped traffic movement through the underpass by placing barricades at both ends. Mayor Pramila Pandey visited several waterlogged areas to take stock of the situation and directed officials to take steps to address the problem.The rain also damaged roads at several places. The drains and nullahs overflowed after becoming choked, allowing drain water to spread onto roads. Prolonged waterlogging and seepage weakened the road surfaces, resulting in the carpeting being uprooted and potholes emerging at various locations. Roads caved in at Ashok Nagar, 80 Feet Road and other areas.Heavy rainfall was also reported from Ghatampur, Bilhaur and Narwal tehsils, adding to the problems caused by the prolonged spell of rain across the district.
