Dempo SC are ninth in the IFL standings with six points

Panaji: Dempo SC’s first win in the Indian Football League after seven games has boosted morale.Now, with two games left in the first phase, Dempo will look for nothing less than six points from their remaining fixtures, both played at home. The five-time national champions showed their ability in their 3-0 win against Shillong Lajong FC last week.Dempo will need the same focus and mindset when they take on Aizawl FC at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Saturday, 4pm. “We have been trying and doing well. We won the last game. It took a bit of time for players to get along together (on the pitch),” Samir told TOI during the pre-match media interaction.Dempo are ninth in the points table with six points after seven games. They managed three draws and suffered as many defeats, before finally tasting success against Lajong. Moreover, their six foreigners arrived just before their campaign began. Argentinean midfielder Damian Perez, who made his debut last season, landed here midway into the season after facing visa issues.Trinidad and Tobago striker Marcus Joseph didn’t lose his scoring touch this season but he could have done with help upfront.“Maybe (it’s because we didn’t have any practice games before the season (commenced). I’m happy we won and we are ready for the challenge again,” said Samir, a former India defender.On the other hand, former champions Aizawl are fifth in the standings with nine points. They come to Goa after holding Sreenidi Deccan FC 1-1.Diamond Harbour FC lead with 16 points, followed by Rajasthan FC and Lajong on 12 points each. Dempo need to break into the top six to have a shot at the title in the second phase.“If you leave two teams, there is not much difference. It is a tight league and a tricky situation for everyone. We are prepared for all eventualities. Everything looks positive after winning the game. First, we need to win against Aizawl and then look ahead. It is one of the most crucial game this season for Dempos,” said Samir.The former international has no injury concerns and a full squad is available against Aizawl.“The situation is difficult, but it is not impossible,” said Ivorian defender Aubin Kouakou. “We are focused. We will give everything for these two games. The mood is good now we have some smiles.”
