T’puram: Varkala police on Monday took into custody the biker involved in the road accident that left a French national grievously injured near Varkala taluk hospital on Sunday night.The rider was later released after being served a notice, as the offence carries a punishment of less than seven years.The injured has been identified as Christine Elimini (63). The accident occurred around 9.30pm when she was walking along the road and was hit by a motorcycle. The rider reportedly left the spot after the accident.According to police, Elimini was first taken to Varkala Sree Narayana Mission Hospital where she was given primary treatment. She was later shifted to MCH, Thiruvananthapuram, where she is undergoing treatment for a serious head injury. During the probe, police traced the motorcycle and summoned the rider, a Varkala native, to the station on Monday. Police recorded his statement and took the motorcycle into custody.“The accident occurred at a stretch considered a black spot. The area has very limited street lighting. Both the biker and the woman may not have noticed each other,” police said.The rider told police that he left the spot out of fear. Police said CCTV footage from nearby establishments is being examined. TNN
