Ludhiana: With rising consumption of junk food and growing concerns over anaemia and lifestyle-related illnesses, the district health department will use National Nutrition Week, beginning Sept 1, to push awareness about healthy eating and balanced diets across Ludhiana.A week-long campaign will be organised at govt health institutions, where residents will be counselled on nutrition, maternal and child health, food hygiene and healthy lifestyle practices.Civil surgeon Dr Ramandeep Kaur said good nutrition is central to disease prevention and plays a critical role in the physical and mental development of children, while also supporting the health and productivity of adults and the elderly.During the awareness drive, health officials will encourage people to add green leafy vegetables, seasonal fruits, pulses, cereals, milk products and dry fruits to their diets, while reducing their intake of junk food, excess sugar, salt and fried items.Special sessions will focus on nutrition for pregnant and breastfeeding women, childhood nutrition, prevention of anaemia, the importance of iron intake and safe drinking water practices.“A healthy family begins with healthy food,” Dr Kaur said, urging parents to inculcate healthy eating habits at home and educate children about the importance of nutritious food from an early age.The civil surgeon said health workers have been directed to reach as many people as possible during the campaign and provide practical guidance on improving dietary habits. “Proper nutrition is the foundation of a healthy body, healthy mind and healthy society,” she said.
