Ludhiana: Residents of E-Block in the 475-Acre Scheme, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar on Pakhowal Road, have raised safety concerns over long-defunct streetlights that leave the locality in darkness every evening.The maintenance gap stems from an ongoing administrative transition: while the colony was transferred from the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) to the municipal corporation (MC), LIT is still completing pending infrastructure works, preventing the MC from fully assuming operational responsibility.Locals reported that the streetlights have remained out of order for several days, complicating evening commutes and worsening general civic upkeep.“After the 475-acre scheme was handed over by the LIT to the MC, residents have been struggling with issues related to cleanliness and maintenance. The defunct streetlights have now made the situation worse,” said resident Arvind Sharma.Others highlighted heightened safety risks for vulnerable groups, citing fears of snatching, theft, and accidents after sunset.“The entire stretch becomes extremely dark after sunset. We are worried about snatching, theft and other untoward incidents. The authorities should not wait for any incident to happen before taking action,” said resident Balraj Chopra.In response to the complaints, an LIT official confirmed that administrative steps are underway to resolve the issue. The official stated that LIT has already floated tenders for streetlight installation and expects work to commence within a few days to restore public safety.
