Slug: National Doctors’ DayAhmedabad: An initiative by the Maninagar Medical Association (MMA) this year screened 191 women, including doctors and their immediate family members. The findings shocked officials. A gynaecologist was detected with ovarian cancer, whereas two were advised immediate surgery for polyps and haemangioma (non-cancerous tumour). Four were sent for further analysis of lesions in the breast.MMA president Dr Urvesh Shah said that the results were an eye-opener, as these women are part of the medical fraternity. “There were 10-15% instances wherein women were sent for further treatment. It was a pilot, and gave a picture of the caretakers of public health. We are going to strengthen the screening further,” he said.As July 1 is celebrated as the National Doctors’ Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr B C Roy, experts said that doctors in the city too are in dire need of care. Dr Bharat Gadhavi, president of Ahmedabad Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association (AHNA), said that they had carried out an internal survey of over 100 doctors from member hospitals recently and found over 10% new cases of diabetes, hypertension, and other conditions.Dr Bhavesh Roy, an interventional cardiologist with Zydus Hospital, said that he is part of a group of doctors who go to the gym regularly and are involved in activities like martial arts to remain fit. “Close to three decades of our lives go into study and practice. We get the same health issues which we warn our patients against. The city today has several active groups of doctors who have taken up cycling, mountaineering and other activities to keep fit,” said Dr Roy, adding that a healthy doctor is a better healer.
