Gumla: Two persons were killed and one another sustained injuries when their speeding motorcycle lost control, veered off a bridge and plunged into a river 25 feet below. The incident took place in Ghaghra police station limits of the district on Tuesday.The deceased were identified as Mangra Oraon, 25, and Charku Oraon, 30, both residents of Badkadih village. The injured, Suraj Oraon, 25, is also from the same village and survived after jumping off the motorcycle moments before the crash.According to villagers, the three were riding on the motorcycle when the accident occurred around 11 am. “Due to excessive speed, the bike went out of control and fell about 25 feet below the bridge into Baki River,” said Prakash Tiwari, a resident of nearby Kharka village.Police personnel from Toto outpost evacuated the three in an ambulance and brought them to Gumla Sadar Hospital for treatment in an ambulance. Doctors at the hospital declared Mangra and Charku dead.Recalling the incident, injured Suraj said Charku recently returned home from a brick kiln in Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh after receiving his wages. “We were going to buy fish at a daily market near Kharka village and planned to celebrate later. Mangra was riding the motorcycle. He suddenly lifted the front wheel, causing the bike to go out of control,” Suraj told police.Sources said the trio had allegedly consumed liquor before the accident and were not wearing helmets. Police, however, said the claims are being verified as part of the investigation.Ghaghra police station officer-in charge Mohan Kumar Singh said, “The damaged motorcycle has been seized and further probe is on.”
