Kendrapada: A total of 3,346 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs) are currently operational in the tribal areas of Odisha, minister of state for labour and employment Shobha Karandlaje informed the Lok Sabha on Monday.The facilities include 2,587 Ayushman Arogya Mandir-sub health centres (AAM-SHCs), 533 primary health centres (AAM-PHCs), 45 urban primary health centres (AAM-UPHCs), 56 urban sub health centres (AAM-USHCs) and 127 AYUSH Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, the minister said, while replying to a question raised by MP Mansukhbhai Dhanjibhai Vasava.The minister stated that public health and hospitals are state subjects, making state govts primarily responsible for planning, establishing, maintaining and ensuring adequate healthcare facilities. However, under the National Health Mission (NHM), the Centre provides financial and technical assistance to states and Union territories based on their programme implementation plans and within the approved resource envelope.Karandlaje said under the Ayushman Bharat programme, 1.86 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs have been established across the country, including 31,366 centres in 178 tribal districts, to strengthen primary healthcare by upgrading sub health centres and primary health centres. These facilities provide comprehensive preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative healthcare services, covering maternal and child health, communicable and non-communicable diseases and other medical conditions.She further informed the House that tele-consultation services are available at all operational Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, enabling people to access specialist healthcare closer to their homes. As of June 30, 2026, the centres conducted 46.9 crore tele-consultations nationwide, significantly improving healthcare accessibility in remote and tribal regions.The minister also said that 1,546 mobile medical units were operational across the country as of Dec 2025, delivering primary healthcare services to remote, tribal and underserved populations, including Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes.Under the free drugs and dree diagnostics service Initiative, the Centre provides financial support to states and UTs to ensure the availability of essential medicines and diagnostic tests at various levels of public healthcare institutions. The govt has also strengthened health infrastructure through the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) and recommendations of the Fifteenth Finance Commission, the minister added.
