Ahmedabad: Uploading an FIR is all it takes for Gujarat police’s new AI tool, Narit, to analyse the case, identify legal weaknesses, suggest investigation strategies, and predict what the defence might argue in court. The system, built on retrieval augmented generation (RAG) technology, has been designed to help every investigating officer conduct legally sound narcotics cases. Officials say the goal is straightforward: fewer procedural lapses, fewer acquittals.The narcotics analysis and RAG-based investigation tool (Narit) was developed by the Western Railway police in the Vadodara division in collaboration with a Mumbai-based AI startup to improve conviction rates under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. It was conceptualised under the guidance of director general of police (DGP) K L N Rao and Anupam Singh Gehlot, and initiated by superintendent of police (SP) Abhay Soni, officials said on Friday. The tool has been designed to identify strengths and weaknesses in cases and provide real-time legal guidance to investigating officers. According to the police, investigators need to upload a first information report (FIR) into the system, which then generates a detailed analysis. This includes identifying legal gaps, suggesting remedies, outlining investigation strategies and providing a checklist of evidence required to build a strong case.A senior officer said the system can also predict likely courtroom arguments from the defence and suggest rebuttals based on past judgments of various high courts and the Supreme Court of India. This feature is expected to help officers prepare more robust cases and reduce the chances of acquittals due to procedural lapses.Soni said investigations in NDPS cases were earlier handled by specialised officers, often leading to delays and increased workload. “This application will act as a force multiplier, enabling every investigating officer to conduct proper and legally compliant investigations,” he said.Officials noted that the system has been trained on historical court rulings, legal provisions and govt guidelines, ensuring high procedural accuracy with minimal scope for errors.The state govt has emphasised a zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics crimes. “This tool will help eliminate procedural gaps, improve the quality of investigations and ultimately enhance conviction rates,” an official said, adding that the system is easy to use and accessible to personnel of all ranks.
