Ahmedabad: Gujarat University’s syndicate and board of management on Friday failed to finalize the third member of the search committee for appointing a new vice-chancellor after members discovered a provision in the new Act requiring the inclusion of the head of a central institution. The university convened a meeting to propose a joint nominee from the syndicate and the board, as two names had already been finalized separately by the state govt and the University Grants Commission. Under the rules, the search committee must have three members before the appointment process can move forward. The current vice-chancellor’s term is scheduled to end in June-July, and regulations require the search committee to be formed three months in advance. Until now, the third member was expected to be chosen from among representatives linked to the EC and AC.However, during the meeting, members were informed that the new Act mandates that the head of a designated central institution be appointed the third member. With no immediate consensus, the decision was deferred, raising the possibility of further delay in constituting the committee.
