Shillong: The third day of the ongoing budget session in Meghalaya was marked by heated exchanges over the demand for introducing the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the tribal-majority state. The debate saw sharp differences between ruling National People’s Party (NPP) legislators led by CM Conrad K Sangma, opposition leader Mukul Sangma of the Trinamool Congress, and Voice of the People Party (VPP) legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit, prompting speaker Thomas A Sangma to briefly adjourn the House for 10 minutes. The govt’s decision to seek protected/restricted area status for Meghalaya under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025 also came under contest.Leader of the opposition Mukul Sangma demanded a direct “yes or no” response on whether the state was pursuing ILP with the Centre, but the CM rejected the demand, insisting on a detailed explanation. Mukul Sangma blamed past administrations for failing to act on the issue, leading to verbal confrontations.Accusing the govt of insincerity, VPP legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit said: “Why does the state want ILP? Because influx comes not only from foreigners but from outsiders. I would like a sincere reply whether the government is playing with the sentiment of the people.”Rejecting the charge, the CM said he had repeatedly written to and met the Prime Minister and Union home minister on the matter. Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong, holding the parliamentary affairs portfolio, told Basaiawmoit, “If you are serious, you should go to Delhi. Stop the drama.” The speaker reminded members to maintain civility during debates, urging them to engage in discussions “in a civilised manner.”
