Nagpur: A 24-year-old unemployed man with a history of assault allegedly tried to burn his wife alive by pouring petrol on her and lighting a matchstick at her mother’s house in Pardi early on Thursday. Relatives, neighbours and passersby rescued the woman.Khushbu Tiwari (24), a homemaker residing at Bhavani Mandir on Punapur road in Pardi, had a love marriage with Suraj Tiwari (24) three years ago. The couple have a nine-year-old child.Khushbu had shifted to her mother’s house allegedly due to her husband’s alcohol addiction, joblessness and assaults. She even attempted suicide, said sources.Suraj, who accused Khushbu of having an affair, reached her mother’s house on August 26 and threatened to kill her. Around 7 am on August 27, he returned and doused her body with petrol. Suraj was about to set her afire with a matchstick when kin and neighbours overpowered him.Khushbu was rushed to Mayo Hospital. A case was registered at Pardi police station under sections including those for attempt to murder and related provisions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused, who has a prior criminal record including a 2020 case under Section 324 IPC for assault and narcotics-related antecedents as per police notes, is on the run.
