Guwahati: The city’s plastic crackdown has yielded 29,620 kg of banned single-use plastic.Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), in collaboration with Pollution Control Board, seized the material during joint enforcement drives across the city.GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania said it would be handed over to authorised facilities for recycling and reuse, keeping it out of landfills, drains and water bodies.“Single-use plastic has been creating various problems in Guwahati. A Supreme Court ruling also states that such single-use plastic should be avoided and that its use and sale should be restricted. Accordingly, our enforcement campaign is underway,” said the mayor.“Earlier, our storage areas were filled with seized plastic, but those spaces have now been cleared. We have again managed to collect a significant amount of banned single-use plastic,” he added.Sarania said the campaign would continue, with the next phase expected to cover plastic glasses, cups and other products. He said GMC officials examined the disposal and recycling process.“There are several vendors and facilities associated with the Pollution Control Board, and the plastic that we seize will be handed over to such facilities for proper processing,” he added.
