T’puram: In a bid to boost voter turnout in the upcoming assembly election, a free travel initiative has been introduced for voters in Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram districts. The scheme is being implemented in collaboration with office of chief electoral officer and Uber India. The initiative aims to ensure that lack of transport does not discourage voters from reaching polling booths and exercising their franchise. Under the programme, voters can avail themselves of free rides to their polling stations using the Uber app, choosing from car, auto rickshaw, or bike services. Locations of all polling booths have been mapped within the app to facilitate easy access. Rides covering up to 2km from the pickup point will be completely free. For distances beyond 2km, standard Uber fares will apply. In addition to providing transport, voter awareness messages will also be disseminated through Uber app notifications and social media platforms. The scheme is designed to benefit all voters, including senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Chief electoral officer Rathan U Kelkar said the initiative is aimed at ensuring maximum participation by making voting more accessible and convenient.
