Patna: Redevelopment of Maa Janaki Temple at Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi, regarded as the birthplace of Goddess Sita, has picked up pace, with foundation work, pillars and the boundary wall being constructed at the site. The project, aimed at developing Punauradham as a major pilgrimage destination, is targeted for completion by Dec 31, 2028.To ensure devotees continue to have access to ‘darshan’ and daily rituals during construction, the temple authorities have shifted the idols of Lord Ram and Mata Sita to a newly built temporary wooden pavilion. Named Shri Sitaram Mandapam, the structure was set up on the temple premises in Aug, where devotees can continue offering prayers.According to the tourism department, foundation work for the main temple and pillar construction for various proposed buildings are underway. Construction of the ‘parikota’, or boundary wall, has also started. An earthen access road is being developed to facilitate the movement of workers and vehicles to the construction site.Officials said key technical preparations, including soil testing and surveys, have been completed. Environmental clearance has also been obtained, while demolition of identified existing structures in the project area has been completed to facilitate redevelopment.The project includes a ‘yajna mandap’, ritual pavilion, residence for the head priest, museum, auditorium and women’s market. A pilgrimage facilitation centre, VIP accommodation and a residence for saints are also proposed.The redevelopment also includes restoration and improvement of Janam Kund, associated with the birth of Goddess Sita, besides development of the sanctum sanctorum and surrounding areas. Security arrangements will also be strengthened as part of the master plan.The tourism department plans to link Punaura Dham with other religious sites associated with Goddess Sita in Sitamarhi and neighbouring areas. Sitapuram and a satellite township are among the proposed development components.The project also seeks to showcase Mithila’s cultural heritage, including Bajjika and Sikki art. The proposed women’s market is expected to provide a platform for local artisans and craftspeople.Tourism minister Kedar Prasad Gupta said Punaura Dham was a major centre of faith for devotees as the birthplace of Goddess Janaki. “Its comprehensive development will provide better facilities to pilgrims and give fresh momentum to religious tourism in Sitamarhi,” he said.Gupta said the project would also promote Mithila’s art, culture and local crafts while creating opportunities for employment and economic activity.
